Hello everyone, it’s Robyn Wood with you today sharing some projects using the new Carved Flowers Large Stencil. The Carved Flowers stamp set is one of my favourites, so it is wonderful to see the shapes reproduced as a stencil. I think this one will get a lot of use in my art journals so let’s have a look at a couple of my ideas for using it:
I enjoy the play of contrast with stark black images on busy, colourful art journal backgrounds. The large Carved Flowers stencil makes a page come together so easily and for this project I have started with a blue toned pre-done page in a Dylusions Dyalog Insert Book.
Instructions:
1. Add some colour to the background using a Gel Press and the large Crackle stencil with acrylic paints in red, orange & yellow.
2. Cover the background with a watery wash of pale blue paint to give a translucent layer of colour.
3. Stencil the spread with two stems from the large Carved Flowers stencil and black paint.
4. Add three patches of black to the edges of the spread, while the paint is still wet carve some patterns into the paint using a wooden skewer. Allow to dry well.
5. Sketch over the stencilled flowers using a white gel pen. Make the lines scratchy and imperfect.
6. To finish the page, add a word from the Wilderness Word Block Stamp which has been stamped onto white card using black Archival ink.
Supplies used:

Archival ink: Jet Black
Gel Plate
Brayer
Acrylic paint in red, yellow, orange, blue & black
White gel pen
The large Carved Flowers stencil also looks fantastic stencilled in flower colours. This time I’ve created a background on a canvas page in the Dina Wakley’s Media journal by stencilling the Journey stencil with texture paste and giving it some colour with the new & totally delicious Distress Oxide spray inks.
Instructions:
1. Stencil parts of the page with texture paste using Journey stencil. Smudge some of the page with extra texture page for a grungy effect. Allow to dry well.
2. Spray page with a little water and then Distress Oxide spray inks. The water will allow the inks to move on the page. An extra spritz to parts of the page will bring out the ‘oxide’ effect. Allow to dry well.
3. Carefully stencil a single flower over one side of the page using large Carved Flower stencil and acrylic paint. The flower will be stencilled right over the top of the textured surface.
4. Enhance one of the words from the background to act as a page feature by sketching around it with a black Stabilo pencil.
Supplies used:
Darkroom Door Carved Flowers Large Stencil
Darkroom Door Journey Medium Stencil
Distress Oxide spray inks: Cracked Pistachio, Mermaid Lagoon & Faded Jeans
Acrylic paint in pink, yellow & green
Black Stabilo pencil
Texture paste
There is something about the quote I have used on this page that just makes me smile! It pairs beautifully with the happy looking flower. Once again, I have used the Dina Wakley Media journal, this time onto watercolour paper.
Instructions:
1. Stencil random pattern over the page using the Gel Plate and the Circles stencil with warm colours of acrylic paint (yellow, orange, red, pink).
2. Stencil further layers of pattern using Polka Dots and Mesh stencils, either by traditional sponging or the Gel Plate. Use similar colours of acrylic paint. The aim is to make the background messy but with layers of pattern distinct.
3. Choose an area of the page for the Carved Flowers stencil and trace the large open flower using a fine black permanent pen. The image will look best if slightly overhanging the edge of the page.
4. Paint out the background around the stencilled shape using black paint.
5. Stencil a few random diamond shapes in the top, left hand corner of the page using large Diamonds stencil and gesso. Allow to dry.
6. Add some sketchy lines around the shapes using a white gel pen.
7. Add extra diamonds to the bottom, right hand corner using the Diamonds stencil and white gel pen. Add a few doodled lines to embellish.
8. Stamp Happy quote onto white card using black Archival ink and fussy cut closely around wording.
9. Add words to page, slightly overlapping flower stem. Give the page a little personality by tilting the words slightly.

Robyn, I've just come across your fabulous post & I have to say I'm loving the pages you've created & am thankful for the good explanations you've given as well. I've just purchased my first small ringed mixed media book as I'd really like to try to make an art journal. I'm hesitant as I really don't feel I have artistic imagination or skill. I also purchased a gelli plate & a few Dollar Store bottles of acrylic paint, so other than my own fear of "not doing it well enough", I've no reason not to give a go. I have a friend who says, "Who's going to fire you?". Only me.
